What are Allergy Shots?

Allergy shots, also known as allergy immunotherapy, offer a chance to desensitize your body to allergens.

These injections gradually introduce small amounts of specific allergens into your body. This process helps build up your immune system's tolerance, reducing allergic reactions.

Allergy therapy shots are beneficial for those who do not find sufficient relief from medications or who wish to reduce long-term medication use.

Frequently Asked Questions about Allergy Shots

  • How do allergy shots work?

Allergy shots involve injecting small, controlled doses of allergens into the body to help build up the immune system’s tolerance. Over time, this reduces the immune system's reaction, leading to fewer and less severe allergic symptoms.

  • Who can’t get allergy shots?

Allergy shots may not be suitable for you if you:

    • Have severe or uncontrolled asthma.
    • Have a compromised immune system.
    • Have a heart condition.
    • Take medications such as ACE inhibitors or beta-blockers.
    • Are pregnant—Pregnant women are not recommended to start immunotherapy. However, it’s important to note, that if you began taking them before becoming pregnant, you may be able to continue them.

Discussing your complete medical history with an allergist is essential to determine if allergy shots are safe and appropriate.

  • Can allergy shots treat food allergies?

Immunotherapy for food allergies is currently in the research and experimental phase. Thus, allergy shots do not currently treat food allergies. People with food allergies should avoid foods they are allergic to.

  • Is allergy shot treatment safe?

Yes, allergy shots are a safe treatment option when administered under the supervision of an experienced allergist. However, as with any medical treatment, there are potential risks, which include redness, itching, swelling at the injection site, and, rarely, anaphylaxis.

  • How long before I see improvement with immunotherapy?

Improvement varies from person to person. Some patients notice fewer allergy symptoms during the build-up phase of the treatment. However, it typically takes 12 months on the maintenance dose to notice significant improvement. Patients often see the full benefits after three to five years of therapy.

  • What should I do before getting an allergy shot?

Avoid strenuous exercise two hours before and after your appointment. It can increase blood flow to the tissues and may cause allergens to spread throughout your body more quickly than usual. Inform your allergist about any medications or supplements you take, as they may affect the treatment.

  • How often do I need to get allergy shots?

Typically, the treatment involves two phases:

    • Build-up Phase: During this phase, you'll receive shots 1-2 times weekly for about three to six months.  This phase involves getting injections with increasing amounts of the allergens every time.
    • Maintenance Phase: This phase starts once you reach the effective dose. The injections become less frequent, typically every two to four weeks. Most patients will continue this phase for three to five years, achieving significant allergy relief and enduring benefits.
