What Are Allergy Shots?

Allergy shots, also known as immunotherapy, are injections that desensitize your immune system to specific allergens. Each shot contains a small, controlled dose of the allergen that triggers your symptoms, such as pollen, pet dander, dust mites, or mold.

With each dose, your body builds tolerance, reducing both the severity of your symptoms and your need for medication over time.

Conditions Treated

Allergy shots can significantly improve the quality of life for individuals suffering from:

Seasonal Allergies (Hay Fever)

Experience relief from pollen-related symptoms like sneezing, congestion, and itchy eyes during spring, summer, or fall.

Year-Round Allergies

Control symptoms triggered by dust mites, pet dander, or mold that affect you throughout the year.

Allergic Asthma

Reduce asthma flare-ups triggered by allergens and improve long-term breathing.

Insect Sting Allergies

Prevent severe reactions to bee, wasp, hornet, or ant stings with specialized venom immunotherapy.

If you’re unsure what’s triggering your symptoms, our comprehensive allergy testing can help identify your allergy triggers and determine whether immunotherapy is right for you.

How Do Allergy Shots Work?

Our immunotherapy program includes two phases:

Build-Up Phase

In this phase, you’ll receive allergy shots 1 to 2 times a week. Each shot contains a slightly increased amount of the allergen, allowing your immune system to adjust over time. This phase usually lasts 3 to 6 months, depending on how your body responds.

Maintenance Phase

Once you reach the right dose, you’ll move to the maintenance phase, with shots every 2 to 4 weeks. This phase typically lasts 3 to 5 years and allows for long-term relief from your allergy symptoms.

Who Should Consider Allergy Shots?

You may be a good candidate for allergy shots if:

  • Your symptoms are moderate to severe.
  • Your current medications aren’t giving you enough relief.
  • You want to reduce long-term medication use.
  • You suffer from allergic asthma or insect sting allergies.

Who Can’t Get Allergy Shots?

While allergy shots are safe and effective for many, they may not be recommended if:

  • You have severe or uncontrolled asthma.
  • You have a weakened immune system.
  • You are diagnosed with a heart condition.
  • You take certain medications, such as ACE inhibitors or beta-blockers.
  • You are pregnant. Starting allergy shots during pregnancy isn’t advised. However, if you began treatment before becoming pregnant, your allergist may recommend continuing with careful monitoring.

To ensure allergy shots are right for you, it’s important to share your full medical history with your allergist. This helps determine if immunotherapy is a safe and appropriate option for your care.

What to Expect During Treatment

Allergy shots are administered at our clinic in a comfortable, controlled environment. Each visit is brief, followed by a short observation period.

Common side effects include minor swelling or redness at the injection site, which typically goes away within a few hours. Our team will monitor your response closely and adjust your treatment as needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Do I need to stop taking allergy medications while on shots?

Not immediately. You may still need antihistamines or nasal sprays in the early stages of treatment. As your symptoms improve, your need for medications decreases.

  • Can children get allergy shots?

Yes. Allergy shots are typically safe for children over the age of 5. Many pediatric patients benefit from early treatment, which can prevent allergies from worsening over time.

  • What happens if I miss a shot?

Missing a shot occasionally isn’t a problem, but consistent treatment is key to success. If too much time passes between shots, we may need to adjust your dose or restart part of the build-up phase.

  • I’ve been searching for allergy shots near me—how do I know if a clinic is the right fit?

When choosing a provider, look for one with proven expertise in immunotherapy and a personalized, patient-first approach to care. If you’re in the San Antonio area, especially near University Heights or along San Pedro Avenue, Apex Allergy and Asthma offers the trusted, expert care you’re looking for.

  • Can allergy shots treat food allergies?

Immunotherapy for food allergies is currently in the research and experimental phase. Thus, allergy shots do not currently treat food allergies. People with food allergies should avoid foods they are allergic to.

  • Is allergy shot treatment safe?

Yes, allergy shots are a safe treatment option when administered under the supervision of an experienced allergist. However, as with any medical treatment, there are potential risks, which include redness, itching, swelling at the injection site, and rarely, anaphylaxis.

  • How long before I see improvement with immunotherapy?

Improvement varies from person to person. Some patients notice fewer allergy symptoms during the build-up phase of the treatment. However, it typically takes 12 months on the maintenance dose to notice significant improvement. Patients often see the full benefits after three to five years of therapy.

  • What should I do before getting an allergy shot?

Avoid strenuous exercise two hours before and after your appointment. It can increase blood flow to the tissues and may cause allergens to spread throughout your body more quickly than usual. Inform your allergist about any medications or supplements you take, as they may affect the treatment.
